Sandy Hollow Wildlife Management Area

In Southeast Louisiana’s fast-growing Tangipahoa Parish, Sandy Hollow Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is an accessible destination for birders, photographers, students, and hunters, including youth hunters and wheelchair users. Visitors often enjoy exciting wildlife encounters with quail, doves, deer, and the threatened gopher tortious that roam the rolling hills of this beloved WMA. But the future of this space depends on a rare and fragile landscape: longleaf pine forests.

Mature longleaf pine forests once covered the region, but today, just one percent remain. At Sandy Hollow WMA, this landscape is making a comeback. That’s why Trust for Public Land partnered with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) to conserve 52 acres between Sandy Hollow WMA and a busy highway. Though modest in size, this land creates an essential buffer from encroaching development, allowing LDWF to continue safe, managed burns that longleaf pine ecosystems depend on, even as the parish continues to grow. Together, we’ll also plant 18,000 longleaf pine seedlings to strengthen this habitat for the future.

Now, locals and tourists alike have more land to explore, and even more reasons to support Louisiana’s outdoor recreation economy. We’ve protected an irreplaceable piece of Louisiana’s natural heritage—and the iconic wildlife it supports— for generations.
