Ozark National Forest

Outdoor enthusiasts flock to northwest Arkansas by the millions to enjoy the vast wild lands of the Ozark National Forest. Whether on foot, mountain bike, canoe, or a scenic drive, dramatic vistas unfold around every bend. Wildlife-rich forests offer exceptional hunting, birding, and camping. Sprawling caves inspire unforgettable spelunking adventures. And the sparkling rivers and lakes that provide clean drinking water for over 88,000 people are top destinations for swimming, paddling, and casting lines for trophy trout and bass.

Even with its rich natural assets and nearly $87 million in yearly visitor spending, the serene mountain atmosphere, scenic views, and clean water quality that set the Ozark National Forest apart have repeatedly come under threat. That’s why TPL has worked with local communities over the past four decades to protect the landscapes that make this forest so special—expanding recreational access and safeguarding more than 11,815 acres of woodlands, waterfalls, springs, and creeks of this natural treasure.

Notably, TPL also helped secure the Congressional Wild & Scenic designation for the Mulberry River by protecting land in the “Three Rivers” headwaters feeding the Mulberry, Kings, and White Rivers;three extremely popular destinations for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. By securing more than two miles along the main entry byway , the forest’s other amenities became even more accessible—from 97 miles of mountain bike trails to nearly 400 miles of hiking trails.

As we continue to protect more places in the The Natural State, our work in the Ozark National Forest shows that expanding access to public lands not only helps strengthen outdoor recreation economies but helps communities thrive in nature for generations to come.
