The University Greenway Story

Since 1994, Trust for Public Land has worked with the City of Chattanooga and the University of Tennessee to build and maintain the University Greenway. This 1.2-mile trail is heavily used by students and other residents, extending from the college campus into surrounding neighborhoods.

But the vision of the University Greenway Trail is far from finished. In 2020, TPL—alongside River City Company and the Benwood Foundation—developed a feasibility study to expand the trail significantly.

The proposed expansion would add about 3 miles to the 1.2-mile trail—connecting both ends to the existing Riverwalk along the Tennessee River. This would truly connect the network of trails in this heavily populated city; it would also connect neighborhoods, businesses, and communities at large. The proposed greenway would help over 6,200 residents gain access to a trail within 10 minutes of their home, as well as benefiting the 180,000+ residents of Chattanooga for generations to come.
