As close-to-home natural spaces, pocket forests improve air quality, sequester carbon, and support local wildlife. Their benefits aren’t just ecological— pocket forests can transform underutilized urban spaces into places that benefit an underserved community through environmental stewardship and community connections. As a resource for the whole neighborhood, they serve as sources of community pride, education, and recreation.

Central to the Pocket Forest Initiative is the Miyawaki forest method, developed by botanist Akira Miyawaki. This groundbreaking reforestation technique emphasizes rapid growth, high density, biodiversity, and organic practices. Designed to be small, pocket forests are suitable for both urban and rural environments.
