Ouachita National Forest

In the majestic Ouachita National Forest, nearly 1.8 million acres of rivers, lakes, and woodlands stretch from Oklahoma to Arkansas under the care of the U.S. Forest Service. Peaceful mountain sunrises greet campers, hikers, and hunters. Mountain bikers chase downhill thrills. Sparkling lakes and waterways, including the ever-popular Lake Ouachita, promise world-class boating and fishing.

Beyond its many outdoor activities, this region is full of life, with a rich mix of plants and animals—some found nowhere else. It offers vital habitat for wildlife and has been named a globally important bird area by the Audubon Society.

Since 1994, TPL has collaborated with local communities and the U.S. Forest Service to expand this priceless treasure by 11,704 acres, including 8,026 acres in Arkansas and 3,678 acres in Oklahoma. Now, thousands of acres around Ouachita Lake and Lake Winona in Arkansas, stetches of the Kiamichi Mountains in Oklahoma, and once-private lands around this national forest are permanently protected. Our work here; protects native habitat, recreational access, and the local watershed, of which more than 100,000 people rely on for drinking water.

As we continue to expand opportunities for people to connect with nature across Arkansas and Oklahoma, our efforts in the Ouachita National Forest ensure future generations will have access to clean water, healthy ecosystems, and the many benefits they provide in beautiful Arkansas.
