Mississippi River Headwaters

The Mississippi River, known as “America’s River,” is the longest river in North America and an essential lifeline for millions who rely on it for drinking water and recreational activities. In the headwaters region, the first 400 miles below the origin at Lake Itasca, this mighty river provides crucial habitats for fish and wildlife, welcomes waves of migratory waterfowl, and offers a cherished haven for hunting, fishing, birding, boating, and hiking. However, much of this land is privately owned and faces threats from development and agricultural conversion.

At the Trust for Public Land, we are dedicated to safeguarding the Mississippi’s headwaters in collaboration with the Mississippi Headwaters Board and the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources. By working with landowners and local communities, we aim to protect and preserve the Mississippi’s sensitive shorelines throughout the headwaters region, including reservoirs and tributaries. Together, we’ll ensure the future of these high-quality habitats and recreation areas along the heart of our nation’s largest river.
