Mann Elementary Community Schoolyard

Ask any kid about their favorite part of the school day, and odds are high that you’ll hear a thrilling recollection of recess. Parents and teachers also recognize that time outside, exploring and connecting with peers, is a vital part of education. However, many schoolyards across Washington (and the nation) don’t reflect that sentiment.

The schoolyard at Mann Elementary used to fall into that category, with large areas of nothing but asphalt and play zones that weren’t always safe for use. In 2024, a committed parent teacher association and local partners teamed up with TPL to change that. Now, the 450 students who attend Mann Elementary have a schoolyard intentionally designed for active and creative play, and those benefits extend far beyond the classroom. Open to the public after school and on weekends, the entire neighborhood reaps the benefits of a close-to-home green space where neighbors of all ages can gather, play, and connect. The transformation of this schoolyard has brought a high-quality park to 3,075 people within a 10-minute walk.

Through climate-smart designs and collaboration with the local community, the schoolyard at Mann Elementary strengthens the region’s climate resilience while also ensuring the space reflects the needs and dreams of the people who use it.
