James Logan Schoolyard

Far too often, schoolyards are underutilized and covered in asphalt, but our Community Schoolyards program transforms these spaces into vibrant oases the entire community can enjoy even after school hours. Across the country, Trust for Public Land has a proven track record of creating schoolyards that improve health and education and create climate resiliency. With many kids spending less than 10 minutes outside a day, these spaces should spark creativity—not turn into flooding hazards or heat traps. That’s why our community schoolyards ditch asphalt for awesome by transforming these playgrounds into vibrant, green spaces that fuel learning, play, and community connection.

James Logan Elementary School is pre-K-5. The school has a massive 2 acre asphalt schoolyard that is currently well used by both the school and the community even though it is hot, barren, and in poor condition. The school has been working to incorporate more outdoor learning and activities into their school calendar. They are excited for a future schoolyard with significantly more shade and greening. TPL worked with student designers in Fall 2024 to design a space that feels supportive and peaceful for everyone. The schoolyard will include significant green infrastructure (thanks to a partnership with the Philadelphia Water Department) to manage extreme weather.
