George Washington Birthplace National Monument

About two hours southeast of Washington, DC, the George Washington Birthplace National Monument (GEWA) is one of the National Parks Service’s oldest historical parks. This stunning 551 acre-property encompasses the former Popes Creek Plantation and ancestral home of the Washington family where our nation’s first president was born. Its rural character and undeveloped charm allows visitors to hike the property’s nature trails, learn about 18th-century colonial life, and picnic along the Potomac River.

With our partners at the National Parks Service, Trust for Public Land has helped conserve over 2,000 acres at George Washington Birthplace National Monument and its surrounding viewshed with plans to protect an additional 800 acres. That means this stunning landscape will be protected forever, allowing visitors to experience the sights and sounds that would have been familiar to the Washington family. Whether in 1657 when George Washington’s ancestors arrived or in the 21st century when schoolchildren visit for history class, TPL is ensuring this area’s natural beauty continues to stand the test of time for everyone to enjoy.
