Dominick Andujar Park

In 2012, a brave 6-year-old boy died a hero after protecting his two sisters during an assault in Camden, New Jersey. His name was Dominick Andujar, and his death sent shockwaves through the community.

Family and neighbors wanted to dedicate a park in Dominick’s honor, and worked with Trust for Public Land to bring this vision to life. They wanted the park to become a destination for families and a safe place for children to play.

In 2021, the park opened with a basketball court, exercise equipment, and playground. According to the last U.S. census, obesity rates in this neighborhood are 44.8 percent, higher than the 26.8 percent average in New Jersey, which was the impetus for the park to encourage a healthy family lifestyle. This project includes the first-ever outdoor elliptical machines and stationary bikes in Camden. Walkers, joggers, and cyclists using the nearby Circuit Trail can even hop off the trail and visit the park to cross-train.

While Dominick’s death was a tragedy, this park in his honor will improve his community for generations to come.
