Broadway Park

Parks are essential and dynamic spaces. They are places that provide us opportunities to be healthy, happy, and resilient, yet only 6 percent of Newark, New Jersey, is used for parks and recreation. And with a population around 300,000 people, there’s a clear need to increase that percentage significantly.

Our investment in green spaces reflects and communicates our core values and goals as communities; they are visible expressions of the type of world we want to live in and want to leave for future generations. That’s why Trust for Public Land is partnering with the City of Newark to revamp an abandoned lot into a destination park for 10,850 residents who live within a 10-minute walk.

Broadway Park is a 2-acre green space in the North Ward of Newark, but many residents aren’t even aware that this space is technically considered a city park. It’s unwelcoming, patchy, and empty, but once completed, this space will reflect the vibrancy and richness of the entire neighborhood. Residents will have places to gather, kids will have space to run, and climate-smart details will bring environmental benefits to the whole community.

This park is adjacent to another TPL project, Luis Muñoz Marín Community Schoolyard, expanding opportunities for students to take learning outside the classroom and play, run, and connect to the benefits of nature.
