Our Appalachia United Outdoors program is building a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for rural communities by leveraging one of the region’s greatest assets: the outdoors. Across Appalachia, outdoor recreation is a powerful engine for economic growth, public health, and climate resilience—but opportunity isn’t always easily accessible in these remote parts.

While the region is rich in natural beauty and cultural history, many communities in this region are facing economic barriers, shifting job markets, limited access to healthcare, and climate risks. Through our Appalachia United Outdoors program, we’re working alongside them to unlock the potential of these outdoor spaces and turn them into opportunities for growth.

Trust for Public Land is launching a five-phase, community-centered strategy to help rural communities tap into the $1.1 trillion outdoor recreation economy. We’re teaming up with local governments, nonprofits, and residents to plan, fund, and implement recreation projects that create jobs, attract visitors, improve health, and strengthen local economies.

By centering our work in places where nature can make the biggest impact and where TPL has an existing presence, we’re helping communities unlock federal and state funding, build partnerships, and bring their outdoor visions to life—from parks and trails to public lands and wildlife corridors. We’ll provide everything from technical expertise and training to project management and funding support.

Together, we’re working to ensure no rural community is left behind when it comes to the benefits of nature to build a stronger, healthier, and more connected Appalachia—one outdoor project at a time.
