Zamora Park

Zamora Park holds many memories, dating back to 1969, when it was the recreational anchor of the El Monte community. Over time, aging infrastructure and limited amenities made the park feel outdated and unwelcoming, reducing its ability to serve as a safe and vibrant gathering place for residents.

In 2017, community members shared their concerns about the park, identifying deteriorating playground equipment, tables, benches, and insufficient lighting that created unsafe conditions. Residents expressed a clear desire for a park that better supports daily life, safety, and connection.

Trust for Public Land began working with the City of El Monte and local residents in 2018, leading participatory design workshops, supporting grant writing, and overseeing design and permitting. Centered on community input, the process ensured the park’s revitalization was rooted in local priorities and City goals. In a city twice as dense as the Los Angeles average, Zamora Park is the only publicly accessible park within a half-mile radius. For nearby elementary schools, a retirement home, and other neighboring health and social service facilities, the park is a vital gateway to the mental and physical health benefits of the outdoors. El Monte’s public transit stops at the park, and two access points connect walkers and cyclists to the San Gabriel River Trail, making the park’s revitalization a key investment in community health, safety, and connectedness.

With renovations complete in 2026, Zamora Park now has more than 100 shade trees, stormwater capture elements, walking paths, fitness equipment, new playgrounds, a refurbished basketball court, a splash pad, and an on-site community center. Once again, the park can serve as a central gathering space that enhances neighborhood pride, safety, and quality of life.
