Sterling Street Sanctuary

The Upper Albany neighborhood in Hartford, Connecticut, is one of diversity and pride. It’s culturally rich and anchored by families, entrepreneurs, and residents who care deeply about their community and each other—and spaces like Sterling Street Sanctuary are a testament to this collective spirit.

Conceived by the visionary community leader, Kamora Herrington, Sterling Street Sanctuary embodies Upper Albany’s vibrancy and diversity. Once a blighted 1.2-acre parking lot, the now beloved space hums with warmth and connection. It’s a space where everyone can show up in their full identity, hosting garden beds for culturally important herbs, a gazebo for gathering and conversation, and a labyrinth for mindfulness and meditation. It also provides a stage for musicians and hosts events produced by local artists for the Hartford community.

For years, the space was cared for and leased by residents; however, it faced a looming threat of sale and development. Kamora connected with Trust for Public Land for help. In 2024, TPL worked with Kamora’s Cultural Corner to raise critical funding and transfer the ownership of the land to local community group KNOX, Inc. But we’re not done yet; together, we’re working to raise vital funds to enhance this property, so it better serves the community for generations to come.
