Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve

“Arlington has grown steadily for decades,” says Paul Lehner, Trust for Public Land project manager for North Texas. “As a result, much of Arlington’s once-abundant open space has been developed, and even the most-attractive natural areas are in danger of disappearing forever.”

The Sheri Capehart Nature Preserve provides a serene, sought-after escape for Arlington’s nearly 400,000 residents. Known as the “gem of southwest Arlington,” the preserve is named after Sheri Capehart, a passionate environmentalist, animal lover, community leader, and long-serving city council member. It provides community members outstanding recreational opportunities without leaving the city.

The preserve features a fishing pond, terraced outdoor seating, and an education area. It’s home to several native plants. High vistas offer stunning views of downtown Fort Worth, and rolling wooded terrain provides refuge for wildlife amid nearby residential and commercial development.

Visitors also enjoy hiking trails, exercise stations, and picnic tables; the Caddo Oak, a 200-plus-year-old post oak tree listed in the Registry of Texas Historical Trees; and evidence of human settlement from thousands of years ago.

The City of Arlington understood the value of these 58 acres to the community. City officials approached Trust for Public Land to prevent residential and commercial development and preserve this natural, open space.

“The [Preserve] is one of the most-attractive undeveloped areas in Arlington,” says Mayor Robert Cluck. “I want to thank TPL and our city parks staff for their work to protect this site for the citizens of Arlington.”
