Rio Grande del Norte National Monument Expansion

In the northern part of New Mexico, amber and sandstone hues sweep across the area’s steep canyons and rugged plains, which illuminate against the backdrop of the turquoise sky. These picturesque landscapes are breathtaking and Trust for Public Land has been working to protect them for decades. In collaboration with our partners, we have a proven track record in this area including 2,500+ acres protected at the Taos Valley Overlook and 3,100+ acres added to the Rio Grande del Norte Monument. Now, we’ve set our conservation sights on 3,750 acres along the southern tip of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, which will complete the scenic backdrop to the Taos Valley Overlook.

Recreation is a large economic driver throughout the state, and an expansion of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument will increase recreational opportunities for millions of visitors that love to hunt, mountain bike, camp, and whitewater raft. For hikers, trail systems will be expanded while improving the public overlook to the iconic Rio Grande Gorge. TPL is continuing to protect and expand our conservation work to safeguard the spaces and outdoor activities New Mexicans love most.
