Prairie Creek Wildlife Management Area

In the 1940s, Walter and Florence Koester purchased farmland just outside Northfield, Minnesota. While some of the property supported their farming livelihood, much of the native prairie, grasslands, and oak savanna remained untouched because of their thoughtful land stewardship practices. For generations, the Koester family hunted, hiked, fished, and enjoyed the abundant wildlife right in their own backyard. In 2013, wanting to share that connection to nature with others, the family partnered with Trust for Public Land and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to permanently protect 460 acres for public enjoyment. Today, it’s one of southern Minnesota’s largest remaining expanses of native grassland.

Since then, Prairie Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) has become a cherished destination for outdoor recreation, nature connection, and wildlife habitat. In 2025, the Koester family, Trust for Public Land, and partners expanded this special place by adding another 134 acres, protecting even more natural lands for hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing. This addition safeguards critical habitat for species like the Swainson’s Hawk, Upland Sandpiper, and Red-headed Woodpecker, and strengthens Prairie Creek WMA’s standing as one of Minnesota’s premier birding destinations. Just as importantly, the land also helps buffer against future flooding and contributes to a climate-resilient future for nearby communities. It’s a living example of how protecting land today ensures a healthier, more connected tomorrow for people and wildlife alike.
