More Than a Park—A Neighborhood Backyard for Everyone To Enjoy

Located between Oakland and Hayward, the community of Ashland, California is incredibly diverse and densely populated—nearly five times as dense as the Alameda County average. Though rich in culture, the area has been historically underserved and lacks green space for its residents with more than 45 percent of Ashland residents currently living without access to a park.

With our partners at the Hayward Area Recreation and Parks District (H.A.R.D.), we’re revamping a blighted 1.4-acre property into a lushly canopied green space for everyone to enjoy. With new playground equipment, picnic areas, BBQ spots, a walking loop, and sports courts, Mateo Street Park will feel more like the neighborhood’s backyard than a city park.

Once complete, this park will be the largest in Ashland and give the community a space to call their own. Over 12,000 residents that live within a 10-minute walk will be able to benefit from this park, including the nearby low-income housing development, community center, health clinic, church, elementary school, and middle school.

Mateo Street Park will also help increase the community’s climate resiliency by adding shade trees, permeable surfaces, and natural landscaping. This park will be an intergenerational space for everyone to come together to play, exercise, gather, celebrate, and enjoy the benefits of nature close to home.

From the Bay Area of San Francisco to the mountains of New Hampshire, Trust for Public Land is working to make parks, playgrounds, and trails more accessible. That means going beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which people in the disability community as well as landscape architects and park planners say don’t go far enough toward achieving truly inclusive design.
