F. Amedee Bregy School

The students, teachers, and staff at Bregy Elementary teamed up with Trust for Public Land to transform their schoolyard from asphalt to amazing, giving more than 300 students and staff a safe, fun, and vibrant green space for everyone to enjoy.

The schoolyard design was created with direct input from students. Through a participatory design process, we worked closely with the fourth-grade class to make their dreams a reality. The students engaged with community members and local leaders to generate news ideas for the schoolyard and visited the Fairmount Water Works to learn about the city’s water history. Enhancing their STEAM skills through planning and design workshops, students worked in groups to propose concept designs and presented their ideas to classmates. The new designs include a colorful play area, basketball court, turf field with a running track, an outdoor learning area, and a beautiful rain garden.

The new community schoolyard space brings to life the student’s collaborative and dynamic ideas, and gives the whole neighborhood a beautiful schoolyard to enjoy. Parks are essential for the mental and physical well-being of all Philadelphians, and this new schoolyard is a key part of our work to close the park equity gap—connecting more than 8,600 residents who live within a 10-minute walk to the benefits of a close-to-home green space.
