Buffalo Bayou
Photo credit: flickr user telwink Meandering for 75 miles through Houston and surrounding Harris County, Buffalo Bayou is an important open space resource. But residents of the crowded East End of Houston enjoy little access to the historic waterway, where the battle of San Jacinto was fought. In 2004, The Trust for Public Land purchased ten acres on a sweeping bend in the bayou for a new waterfront park. Linked to other recreation areas by a new trail system, the new park will help improve water quality and provide bayou access for birding, kayaking, canoeing, and nature education programs. We provided interim financing for the property, which was transferred to Harris County for permanent protection, and management.
