Alliance For Civil Rights Historic Sites

The National Park Service has acquired and preserved many significant civil rights historic sites across the country. Unfortunately, NPS has lacked funds to properly restore and open these historic treasures to the public. The opportunity to tell the authentic story of the African American experience in America vividly and with urgency is too often lost behind closed doors or confined to a commemorative plaque.

Trust for Public Land has partnered with NPS and others to restore these sites to tell the vivid and honest history of America’s failures and triumphs in the struggle for civil rights. We are partnering to raise resources for restoring and programming eight historic Park Service sites:

• Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument
• Freedom Riders National Monument
• Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Park
• Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument
• Natchez National Historical Park
• Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail
• Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site
• Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site

TPL has a long and notable history of working closely with communities across the country to elevate the lessons our history has to offer and strengthen a connection to our nation’s shared heritage. By thoughtfully preserving sites and spaces that hold meaning, we elevate the stories of Black Americans to their rightful place.
