Alain Locke School

The Alain Locke School serves one of Philadelphia’s largest populations of homeless students and families. In the surrounding neighborhood, just under half of community members live below the poverty line. Many residents experience high levels of asthma, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
The Trust for Public Land was tapped by the City of Philadelphia, the School District of Philadelphia, and Drexel University to build a new green schoolyard at Locke that does double duty as a community park. The Locke schoolyard will become a vibrant community hub, open to the public after school hours and designed to meet the needs of the more than 6,100 people who live within a 10-minute walk. That means new custom play areas, athletic courts, and features for neighbors of every age.
The green schoolyard at Locke is slated to open in Fall 2022.
