Trust for Public Land Statement on Senate Bill 1091

Trust for Public Land Vice President of the Pacific Region and California State Director Guillermo Rodriguez released the following statement after Governor Newsom signed SB 1091 authored by State Senator Caroline Menjivar to improve access for schools to pursue greening projects:

“Green, climate-resilient spaces serve the needs of kids and their communities, especially now that rising temperatures pose more risk to student health and performance than ever before.”

“We applaud Governor Newsom’s decision to sign SB 1091 into law and Senator Menjivar for her leadership, which will eliminate a significant barrier to greening schoolyards across the state. Trust for Public Land has partnered with schools to renovate nearly 350 schoolyards in 23 states across the country, and the passage of SB 1091 means we can continue improving kids’ health and wellness at school and in our communities.”

Trust for Public Land co-sponsored SB 1091 with Green Schoolyards America. The bill was supported by a wide coalition of health, environmental, and public education advocates.
