Lawrence N. Gelb

Lawrence N. Gelb is the founder and former President and CEO of CareCounsel, LLC, a pioneer in employer-sponsored healthcare advocacy services headquartered in San Rafael, California. Lawrence N. Gelb founded CareCounsel in 1998 and was CEO until 2014, two years after the firm was acquired by Stanford Health Care. Before founding CareCounsel, Dr. Gelb held senior positions at Foundation Health Corporation, Occupational Health Services, Preferred Health Care and Kaiser Permanente’s Total Health Care Program. Larry has served on the clinical faculty of the Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco, was a founding member of the National Advisory Board of the Institute for Behavioral Healthcare and has served on the editorial boards of Practice Strategies and Behavioral Healthcare Tomorrow. As Director of the Partnership for Healthcare Excellence, Dr. Gelb chaired “Demand Management in Action: the First National Conference on Consumer-Focused Solutions to Improve Health Status and Member Satisfaction.”

Dr. Gelb has an AB from Harvard College where he graduated magna cum laude and an MBA from the Harvard University School of Business Administration. Before getting his MBA, he earned an MS in Health and Medical Sciences from the University of California at Berkeley and a Doctorate of Mental Health from the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Gelb has served on the Board of Directors of the Cate School and the YMCA of San Francisco and is a founding member of Harvard Business School’s Healthcare Initiative Advisory Board.
