Urban Orchard

Los Angeles | California

What We Did
Worked with community members to design and create a multibenefit park and green infrastructure project in South Gate—a community in Southeast L.A. (SELA).

Our Goal
Provide a quality park within a 10-minute walk of the South Gate community and ensure Urban Orchard honors and supports its residents.

  • Planting a Fruitful Future for Los Angeles

The South Gate Urban Orchard welcomes the community with a fruit orchard, playground, pathways, and plenty of space to gather, exercise, and hang out. Meanwhile, a restored wetland and green infrastructure will improve water quality and fish habitat, making this park a link in the chain of restoration projects taking place in communities along the river’s course.

  • Trust for Public Land and research partners also facilitated a Participatory Action Research project to understand the risk of gentrification and displacement in the communities surrounding the Urban Orchard. Findings and recommendations helped guide the city on strategies that best position existing residents to benefit from these developments while promoting economic growth and prosperity in the area.
