Murray Farm

Stretching across 14 states and countless landscapes, the Appalachian Trail connects people to nature in powerful ways. At the New York–New Jersey border, one special place has long embodied that spirit of connection: Murray Farm.

For decades, Murray Farm has been a welcoming haven for Appalachian Trail hikers—thanks in large part to owner “Backpack Jim” Murray, one of the original thru-hikers of the trail in 1989. On more than 80 acres, Jim opened his land to hikers seeking rest, reflection, and community, creating a tradition of generosity that became part of the trail experience itself.

Trust for Public Land is working to raise critical funds to help ensure this beloved place continues to serve hikers and the land for generations to come. The National Park Service will ultimately steward Murray Farm, ensuring this welcoming rest stop remains accessible to all who seek refuge along the trail. This work will also give NPS the opportunity to explore rerouting a flood-prone section of the Appalachian Trail, improving safety, accessibility, and the overall hiking experience.
