Miami River Greenway

Free-flowing water can transform, unite, and grow communities. Weaving straight through downtown Miami, the Miami River was left in poor shape after years of neglect, but the early 2000s brought ongoing community efforts to clean up the river—removing trash, depolluting, and dredging for miles. With those efforts came opportunities to imagine a Miami River unlike ever before.

Trust for Public Land worked with the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, and the Miami River Commission to design and approve the Miami River Greenway, a 10-mile scenic trail connecting nine public parks full of dockage, kayak launches, pools, playgrounds, gymnasiums, sports fields, and more. Through long-term work and substantial fundraising, 7 miles of the greenway have been developed, with 3 miles left until completion. The Miami River Greenway is a reminder not just of the power of public land but also of the power of rallying communities around natural resources.
