Hillcrest Urban Forest

Washington, DC is often called a “city in the trees” because of the expansive tree canopy that covers much of the District. The trees help give DC neighborhoods their charm but also provide vital green infrastructure to communities like managing stormwater, filtering air, and providing shade, and wildlife habitat. When Casey Trees, a DC-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving and expanding urban forests, found 12.5 acres of privately owned, undeveloped forest—a large property by DC standards—they asked TPL for help permanently protecting it.

Located east of the Anacostia River in the Hillcrest neighborhood, along the DC/Maryland border, this wooded space represents a significant opportunity to bring nature closer-to-home for residents. Once complete, this Hillcrest Urban Forest will protect a mature forested area, including several heritage trees, support local wildlife, and provide locals with access to a peaceful natural retreat within the bustling city.

In partnership with Casey Trees and the DC Department of Parks and Recreation, we’re working to preserve the space, restore native plantings, and develop nature trails. While a special grant from the National Park Service will cover about half of the project costs while Casey Trees, we’re working to raise the remaining funds to ensure this space is accessible today and for future generations.

Hillcrest Urban Forest is an investment in health, equity, and quality of life for a neighborhood often overlooked, even though it lies just a few miles from the U.S. Capitol. Our collective work here will stand as a powerful example of how thoughtful partnerships can turn hidden green space into a thriving community asset.
