Buffalo Mountain Town Forest Expansion

Nestled in northern Vermont and rooted in a rich history of granite quarrying, the small community of Hardwick is growing into a vibrant destination for outdoor recreation. As interest in nature and recreation continues to rise, Trust for Public Land is working with the community to expand the Buffalo Mountain Town Forest by conserving 329 acres of scenic forestland.

This special landscape includes the summit of Buffalo Mountain, one of the town’s most iconic high points and Hardwick’s backdrop. The expansion will create more opportunities for residents and visitors to explore, connect with nature, and enjoy this treasured place. Located near the Elementary School, the forest also provides a unique setting for outdoor learning and environmental education. Trails on Buffalo Mountain will invite people to hike, run, snowshoe, and explore year-round, supporting both physical and mental well-being. Thoughtful forest management, including sustainable timber harvesting, will further benefit the town.

Beyond recreation, the project will strengthen Hardwick’s resilience and local economy. Protecting land along the Lamoille River corridor will enhance flood protection and climate resilience, while access from the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and preserved scenic views will help position Hardwick as a welcoming recreation destination. By late 2026, TPL plans to assist the Town of Hardwick in purchasing these 329 acres, with a conservation easement co-held by Northern Rivers Land Trust and Vermont Housing and Conservation Board to ensure lasting protection.

By expanding the Buffalo Mountain Town Forest, this project will deepen Hardwick’s connection to nature and to one another. With trail access, scenic overlooks, and a renewed focus on stewardship, Buffalo Mountain will remain a source of pride, beauty, and inspiration for generations to come.
