Lake Caledon

Trust for Public Land and our partners at the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation have expanded Caledon State Park by nearly 20 percent, protecting the stunning 471-acre Lake Caledon property in King George County. This is big news for nature lovers in Virginia!

Tucked alongside the park’s border, this once-threatened land is now a gateway to new outdoor experiences—camping under the stars, paddling across a 47-acre lake, spotting bald eagles overhead, and exploring even more miles of the Dahlgren Railroad Heritage Trail. It’s the first real opportunity to bring full-scale overnight access to Caledon, a National Natural Landmark long beloved for its peaceful forests and Potomac River views.

This win began with local neighbors and the Friends of Caledon State Park, who teamed up with TPL to turn a bold idea into reality. Together, we secured federal and state funding and brought in key support from the U.S. Navy through our trusted REPI partnership, which has conserved thousands of acres along the lower Potomac River.

Thanks to this collective effort, more Virginians and visitors alike will be able to connect with the land, the water, and the wonder of the natural world—right here at Caledon.
