Lolo National Forest

Located on the western edge of Montana, Lolo National Forest encompasses 2 million acres of vast mountain ranges, pristine lakes, and captivating forests with trees dating back over 1,000 years. It’s no wonder why nearly 1.5 million visitors come to connect with its untouched natural beauty with some of the best hiking trails, fishing holes, and hunting spots in the state. But as Montana continues to see breakneck growth and rising real estate markets, TPL and partners are doing everything we can to keep Montana, Montana. For decades, access to Montana’s most treasured land has been guaranteed through little more than a handshake agreement. Now, we’re working with local communities to identify and protect the lands Montanans love most.

At Lolo National Forest, TPL has helped protect over 20,000 total acres through our work at Deep Creek and the Lolo Trails Landmark Project. These projects not only complement the existing network of public land, but also create much-needed recreational access near the ever-growing city of Missoula. Our Lolo Trails Landmark Project helped conserve miles of the Nez Perce National Historic Trail and the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail, and both projects protect critical habitat for moose, elk, Canada lynx, grizzly and black bears. TPL is continuing to protect land across the state, ensuring future Montanans can connect to the benefits of the outdoors.
