Protecting lands of historic and cultural importance keeps us in touch with the past and who we are as a people. Whether a nationally famous landscape or a little-known community treasure, these places serve as physical reminders of events that shaped the nation.
The Trust for Public Land works to conserve these special sites for future generations. TPL projects have secured permanent protection for Civil War battlefields and the iconic homes of famous Americans, including the Atlanta neighborhood of Martin Luther King Jr. and Henry David Thoreau’s Walden Woods.
TPL’s Heritage Lands work also includes a Tribal and Native Lands Program, which has helped to secure nearly 50,000 acres for 17 different Native American tribes.
