Agricultural Land Preservation and Land Conservation in Okanogan County
In a partnership that began in 2007, TPL works with the Okanogan Valley Land Council, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Conservation Northwest, and local landowners to sustain the ranching economy and conserve important natural areas and recreation opportunities in north-central Okanogan County. Achieving this goal required a rigorous examination of the future conservation benefits at risk.
To better understand the pressures and changing landscape of ranching in the Okanogan Valley, TPL contracted with a local nonprofit research group to analyze landownership and ranching trends. In 2010, TPL researchers prepared a follow-up white paper that combined findings from the previous report with prominent ideas and expertise of local ranchers, wildlife experts, local leaders, and long-time residents.
