What We’re Doing
Protecting a community space and vision
Invest in and protect the spaces communities most rely on
The Upper Albany neighborhood in Hartford, Connecticut is one of diversity and pride. This culturally rich community is anchored by families, entrepreneurs, and residents who care deeply about their community and each other. While the neighborhood has suffered from disinvestment over the years, the community is working together to reverse the trend, starting with spaces like the Sterling Street Sanctuary. This 1.2-acre parking lot turned community space hums with communal energy and its name is a nod to what this place offers to nearby residents—a safe and welcoming space for all. It hosts garden beds for culturally important herbs, a gazebo for gathering and conversation, and a labyrinth for mindfulness and meditation. It also provides a stage for musicians and hosts events produced by local artists for the Hartford community. Sterling Street Sanctuary truly is at the heart of the community, and the community is at the heart of everything we do.
For years, the space was cared for and leased by local residents, but now it’s under threat of sale, meaning a beloved community treasure will be lost forever. Trust for Public Land is working with KNOX Inc. and Upper Albany residents to safeguard the space—but we need your help. Raising critical funds is the first-step in protecting this beloved community space for generations to come. With your support, Sterling Street Sanctuary can continue to amplify and celebrate Black, Queer, and Afro-centric people and families, where all are welcome to show up in their full identity.
