Our work at Huysink Lake

Tahoe National Forest is one of the most popular recreational forests in the United States. Whether camping under a starry summer night sky or cross-country skiing on exceptional trails during the winter, Tahoe National Forest provides year-round recreational opportunities for nearly 150,000 visitors each year. But as national forests across the country continue to see an increase in people looking to experience the joys nature can bring, TPL is working with our partners at the U.S. Forest Service to create more spaces that bring us all outside.

The land surrounding Tahoe National Forest is often under company or private ownership, meaning it can be sold to development companies looking to build second homes and restrict public access. TPL has been working for decades to protect land around Tahoe National Forest, including the conservation opportunity at Huysink Lake. We helped preserve 760 acres at Huysink Lake as an addition to Tahoe National Forest, which will expand recreational access and enhance the trailhead to one of the national forest’s most popular backcountry camping and trail networks. This Salmon Lake Trailhead offers a less challenging and less crowded alternative for visitors to access the popular Loch Leven and Salmon Lakes Basin. Besides enhanced recreational access, the conservation efforts at Huysink Lake protect critical wildlife habitat and increase climate resiliency in the region by maintaining healthy wetlands and meadows.
