Gift from TD Bank will provide Fitness Zones in Miami

TD Bank has donated $850,000 to The Trust for Public Land to install six Fitness Zone® areas in Miami-Dade County parks, the two organizations announced today.

The Trust for Public Land has built 14 Fitness Zones in the past three years in parks in the Miami-Dade County area, providing free and easy-to-use outdoor gym equipment that is accessible to all. By offering strength training and aerobic exercise equipment within existing parks, often next to playgrounds and other frequently-used facilities, Fitness Zones create new opportunities for park users to get active and model healthy behavior.

The first two Trust for Public Land Fitness Zone® areas created with support from TD Bank will be located in Tropical Park and Amelia Earhart Park, both Miami-Dade County parks. Among the four future sites, two will be serve as models of green infrastructure, incorporating site-appropriate features such as rain gardens, newly-planted trees, light-colored surfaces, and permeable pavement to help mitigate flooding, increase water quality, improve air quality, and reduce surface temperatures. Adding green infrastructure to these two Fitness zones will increase community resiliency, helping communities utilize the new amenities to address adverse environmental and health issues.

“TD Bank’s gift demonstrates their commitment to the neighborhoods where they work,” said Adrian Benepe, Senior Vice President and Director of City Park Development at The Trust for Public Land. “People need places close to home to get outdoors and exercise and Fitness Zones are a great way to get fit and get outdoors at the same time.”

“TD Bank considers the environment in everything we do and we continue to support our communities through employee engagement and donations to organizations like The Trust for Public Land,” said Ernie Diaz, Regional President, TD Bank. “These Fitness Zones will not only allow Miamians access to free fitness equipment in their local parks, but also help enhance and preserve green park space across Miami-Dade County.”

The Trust for Public Land’s vision is to have a park within a 10-minute walk of everyone in America’s cities, and these Fitness Zone installations will improve local access to wellness. “Research shows that access to nearby parks—and The Trust for Public Land’s Fitness Zone® areas in particular—directly improves our health and wellness,” added Benepe.
