The Trust for Public Land’s first office opened in San Francisco in 1973 with a dozen staff and a new model for land conservation. Today, TPL’s work in California has expanded to reflect the tremendous diversity of the state’s communities and landscapes, from the high Sierra to inner-city Los Angeles. The more than 350,000 acres of land preserved through TPL projects encompass century-old working ranches, vibrant urban parks, and critical wildlife habitat—with the goal of providing every Californian with easy access to the places that make the state special.

TPL conserves the very best of California:  inspirational beauty, clean water, healthy natural systems, and the opportunity for all Californians to play outside in places they love. Our work takes us to every part of the state, but we focus our resources in four program areas where there is both great opportunity, and very real need.
