North Carolina

More than half a million people obtain their drinking water from Mountain Island Lake near Charlotte, North Carolina. The Trust for Public Land and its partners are leading a regional effort to ensure water quality by protecting 80 percent of the lake's undeveloped shoreline and critical tributaries. In North Carolina's fast-growing metro areas, TPL is working to keep communities livable by protecting parks, trails, and greenways: the Carolina Thread Trail aims to link 15 counties and create a permanent legacy of conservation.
