McLeod Farms
Credit: Ed Funk
Working with the Marine Corps Air Station and the SC Conservation Bank, TPL placed a conservation easement on the 375-acre McLeod Farms, now owned by Beaufort County. The preservation of the farm ensures habitat for a variety of species including deer, raccoon and migratory and threatened birds. It also protects water quality by inhibiting development in a sensitive area along the coast. The easement property lies beneath the flight path for the nearby Marine Corps Air Station, which is a local and national resource of a different type. The county plans to create a park on their newly acquired land. Funding was provided by the Department of Defense Navy buffer program, the Beaufort County Rural and Critical Lands Program and the South Carolina Conservation Bank.
