Chattooga River

Arising high in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and continuing its flow through South Carolina and Georgia, the Chattooga River is one of the few remaining free-flowing streams in the Southeast. Floaters, hikers, and fishermen all flock to this national Wild and Scenic River, one of the region's most popular recreation destinations. For years, the US Forest Service has been working to protect the undeveloped character of the stream and its tributaries in the face of encroaching second home development. At the end of 2004, TPL helped protect 84 acres on Long Creek in Oconee County, a significant tributary for the river. The land was added to Sumter National Forest
