Newark Riverfront Park

Since the city's founding in the mid-1600s, the growth and prosperity of Newark has been closely linked to the Passaic River. Yet for many decades, the community has been alienated from the river in virtually every way. With few green spaces in a densely populated area, Newark needs more parks. Now, with support from The Trust for Public Land, the city is creating a healthy, vibrant riverfront worthy of Newark's greatness that is accessible for everyone.
Newark Riverfront Park will encompass 7.1 acres and include walking and biking trails, a floating dock for boat access, a riverside boardwalk, a community gathering and performance area, and an outdoor learning space. But most importantly, the new park will provide much-needed outdoor public space and help the community re-establish its connection to the Passaic River. The first segment of Newark Riverfront Park will open to the community on August 3, 2013. Now, Newark Riverfront Park connects the Ironbound neighborhood to the Passaic River for the first time in many decades—stretching from downtown Newark on the west, to the newly installed 12-acre Essex County Riverfront Park to the east.
The Trust for Public Land is leading the effort to assemble the private and public funding needed to begin construction on the last segment of the park. Our work to create a Newark Riverfront Park where the community can gather and access the Passaic River, would not be possible without the vision of our donors and partners.
