Connecticut Lakes Headwaters
Credit: Jerry and Marcy Monkman
These 171,000 acres at the northern tip of the state encompass almost the entire watershed of four lakes that form the Connecticut River's headwaters. In 2001, TPL agreed to buy the property from International Paper Company, and over the next two years, multiple partners worked to protect this land, which constitutes 3 percent of the state's total area. Some of property is state-owned and managed as a natural area, while the remainder is conserved as a sustainable, working forest managed by a local timber company.
