Sabo Farm
Credit: Bob Firth
When Harold and Doris Sabo approached retirement, they decided to sell their 2,500-acre Clearwater County farm bordering the Red Lake Chippewa Reservation in northern Minnesota. Acting on the Sabos' desire to see the land added to the reservation, TPL helped the Red Lake Band of Ojibwe acquire the property in 1994. Now the band has added wild rice farming to their other businesses, which include milling, commercial fishing, gaming, and waste management. The farm's 1,300 acres of wild rice paddy produce 75 tons of commercial wild rice annually and host thousands of migrating waterfowl.
