African American Meeting House

The heart of Boston's Museum of African American History is the African Meeting House, the oldest remaining black church structure in the United States. In the 19th century, the meeting house was central to the local African American community, and it hosted giants of the abolitionist movement. When the growing museum needed space to expand, TPL helped it acquire an adjacent building to serve as its first Education and Technology Center. By providing public access to documents and artifacts, the expansion is helping the museum fulfill its mission of showcasing the organization of the African American community in the formative years of the Republic.
