Renowned for its role in the historic Supreme Court decision outlawing racial segregation in public schools, the Monroe School, in Shawnee County, KS, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991. Purchased in a TPL-assisted transaction by the National Park Service, the school was developed as an interpretive center on the struggle for civil rights.

When the people agreed to be plaintiffs in the case, they never knew they would change history. The people who make up this story were ordinary people. They were teachers, secretaries, welders, ministers and students who simply wanted to be treated equally.
The site includes an auditorium with continual film screenings, the "Education and Justice" gallery, information kiosks and music stations, the former kindergarten room which is now the "Expressions and Reflections" gallery, and other special exhibits.
