Downtown Minneapolis Park Space Initiative

Parks and tree-lined boulevards surround the Chain of Lakes and Minnehaha Creek in Minneapolis, but downtown Minneapolis lacks a centralized unifying public space that connects the growing residential neighborhoods with established commercial corridors.

In 2007, with funding provided by the McKnight Foundation, The Trust for Public Land joined the City of Minneapolis and several partners to study how existing park and open spaces can be more successful and financially viable and explore possible locations and features for a future park.

The report explores:

• how existing public space is currently being used in Minneapolis
• illustrates successful examples in other cities
• explores design and utility most appropriate for a premier downtown green space
• outlines various ownership models appropriate for Minneapolis
• describes various financing options for funding park space.
