Bixby Bridge and Brazil Ranch

Rugged cliffs, sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, and rolling hillsides as far as the eye can see—this is the coastal gem, Big Sur. Miles of awe-inspiring landscape have captivated visitors from around the world as they witness the dramatic meetings of land and sea. But like many iconic places throughout California, part of Big Sur’s preservation was made possible because of Trust for Public Land.

Starting in the early 2000s, Trust for Public Land partnered with residents and community activists to help protect 11 miles of Big Sur’s coastline. Stretching 1,255 acres from the iconic Bixby Bridge to Andrew Molera State Park, this area is known as Brazil Ranch and was named for the pioneer family that owned it starting in the late 19th century.

In 1977, Brazil Ranch was purchased by Allen Funt, the creator of the popular television show Candid Camera, who developed the land to raise quarter horses and cattle. After his death in 1999, the property was sought after by developers looking to subdivide it into nine parcels. It is here where Trust for Public Land stepped in to preserve Big Sur’s landscape forever.

With our partners at the U.S. Forest Service, TPL helped secure Brazil Ranch as an addition to the Los Padres National Forest. Brazil Ranch has been featured in countless travel articles, advertisements, and commercials because of its beauty and grandeur. Its steep and rugged terrain has become a beloved hiking destination for those that love a challenge.

But as many hikers say, the best views are always from the top. Brazil Ranch offers spectacular views of the rocky coastline, Bixby Bridge, and Hurricane Point—and thanks to Trust for Public Land—this area can continue to stand as a timeless coastal jewel for generations of people to enjoy.
