The Trust for Public Land Data Privacy Policy

The Trust for Public Land is committed to protecting your data privacy. The information below covers what information is collected on our website and how we use it. If you have questions or concerns, please email us.

What information do we collect?

Our websites collect information volunteered by visitors, such as answers to survey questions, information collected when downloading or requesting publications, and information collected when contacting us for conservation assistance. Information we collect includes personally identifiable information (for example, name, address, and email), information about organizational affiliation, and information about your parks and open space interests. No personably-identifiable information is collected about individuals without their knowledge. We also collect aggregate information about website use, without identifying personal information, such as what pages and sections are most popular with users.

To help improve access to quality parks and public lands, we purchase location data from reputable third party vendors who contractually represent to us that they are authorized to obtain and share information with us. We do not combine location data with any personally-identifiable information such as names and home addresses. We do combine location data with our own parks data and publicly-available, non-personal information from other sources including the U.S. Census. We aggregate this information and visualize it to show park visitation trends and patterns. These aggregations and visualizations are intentionally designed to help park advocates, agencies and public officials increase equitable access to quality parks.

How is this information used?

We use the information you voluntarily provide to help us decide what website content, publications, emails, and other information would most help you meet your parks and open space goals and to shape our web content and email outreach. We may also contact you to alert you about a conservation opportunity in your area or to ask you to support our work. We use aggregate information about website usage to shape website content.

Sharing information with third parties

We share aggregate information about web users and web usage with our contractors who help us shape web content to user interests and otherwise improve our website. We do not make any list of visitors to our website or their email addresses available to third parties. We make portions of our postal mailing list available to carefully screened organizations that we believe may interest you. If you do not want to receive this information, please let us know by emailing us at info@tpl.org.

Email and mail policy

The Trust for Public Land provides forms on our websites where users can sign-up to receive email publications and email notices and conservation topics. No one is placed on a regular email list that has not requested subscription through these forms or in some other manner. Users can unsubscribe from any email list through the unsubscribe link on any email we send you. As new email publications are developed, users may be sent an invitation to subscribe. From time to time, we may also share donor names and mailing addresses with other nonprofit organizations on a limited basis in exchange for limited access to the names and mailing addresses of their constituents. You, as a donor, may at any time have your name excluded from any donor list exchange activity. To ask that your name be excluded from list exchange activity or to otherwise change how we contact you, please email us at info@tpl.org. We will discontinue contacting any person upon that person’s oral or written request to any office of the organization.

Security of your information

We take the following measures to ensure that information collected on our website is kept secure and is used as intended:

All data is stored on secure, firewall-protected servers either at our offices or those of businesses with whom we have contracted to support our online donation, email outreach, and online store services. Data is accessible only by authorized staff of The Trust for Public Land and its contractors.

Use of cookies

Cookies are pieces of information that are stored on your computer and are used for record keeping purposes. Our websites use cookies to facilitate authentication and personalization. We use only anonymous information (such as IP address) to track how our online visitors use our website. Our email newsletter system requires a password to access the subscription management page. For the convenience of users, the system offers the opportunity to be “remembered,” so a password is only required on the first access. Asking to be “remembered” by clicking the “remember me” or similar dialog box when asked places a permanent cookie on the user’s machine.

We use Google Services, such as Google Analytics, which place first-party and/or third-party cookies on a browser across our websites. To opt out of Google tracking, please visit their opt-out page. We also use Google AdWords “remarketing” to market our site across the web. We place a cookie on a browser, and then Google reads these cookies and may serve an ad on a 3rd party site. You may opt out of this ad serving on Google’s opt out page. If you are concerned about 3rd party cookies served by networks, you should also visit the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page.

Our website provides links to several other third party websites. While we make efforts to choose our links carefully, we cannot take any responsibility for the content of linked websites, or for the privacy policies of websites we link to. Since we do not control these websites, we encourage you to review the privacy policies posted on these third party websites prior to any use.
