TPL agreed to purchase 73 acres, the first in a series of acquisitions planned for a 1200-acre East Sandusky Bay Nature Preserve. The bay's freshwater marsh provides habitat for many bird species, including bald eagles. The property will be transferred to Erie MetroParks, which will provide community access to this new recreation area.

TPL praised U.S. Senator Mike DeWine for requesting federal money to protect 1,200 acres on East Sandusky Bay, the largest unprotected natural marsh along the Lake Erie shoreline. TPL is working with The Nature Conservancy, to help Erie MetroParks to acquire the land for use as an open space resource that protects wildlife habitat and provides recreation opportunities and public access to the lake.

This 122-acre property west of Chillicothe, Ohio, is part of the Seip Earthworks. The site contains prehistoric and archaeological sites and will be added to the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park, which is composed of five ancient earthwork sites. The 1,300 acres of woods, wetlands, and meadows known as Edison Woods are now permanently protected as a nature preserve that also safeguards water quality. Erie MetroParks has leased the land from Ohio Edison Company since 1991, managing it as parkland and providing a network of nature trails for the public. TPL partnered with the City of Marion and Erie MetroParks to acquire funding through Ohio EPA's Water Resource Restoration Sponsor Program.

The 155 woodland acres surround Sawmill Creek, a major tributary to Meander Reservoir, source of drinking water for over 400,000 people. The land, slated for development of a golf course, also includes over 500 feet of frontage along the Mahoning Bike Trail, which will stretch 100 miles from Lake Erie to the Ohio River. TPL purchased the land with a water-quality-improvement loan from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and will transfer the land to Mill Creek Metroparks under a lease-purchase agreement over the next five years.

The Medina County farmland preservation measure would be the first of its kind in Ohio. The state's most rapidly developing county is predicted to lose more than 20,000 acres of rural land over the next ten years. The meeting will feature speakers from TPL and the American Farmland Trust. Dick Struthers, a Pennsylvania farmer who enrolled his farm in a program similar to the one being considered by Medina County, will discuss his experience.
