The Trust for Public Land, the Nature Conservancy, the Sandusky/Erie County Community Foundation, and Erie MetroParks announced today the acquisition of two critical properties forming a newly created nature preserve along East Sandusky Bay. In two separate real estate transactions, TPL protected 1,029 acres along the Lake Erie shoreline. These properties are the Community Foundation Preserve at Eagle Point and Putnam Marsh, and they are the first two properties to be placed into the ownership and stewardship of Erie MetroParks.

TPL announced the acquisition of 70 acres of woodland property in the first step creating a new park in the heart of Avon Lake, Ohio. The future park will be owned and managed by the Lorain County Metro Parks. The Avon Lake Save the Woods Committee, the Lorain County Metro Parks, and the City of Avon Lake all played vital roles in acquiring the land from its previous owners, Kopf Builders.

Built in 1849 by Bavarian immigrants, Henninger House is the oldest home in Parma, Cleveland's largest suburb. It will become a landmark along the new West Creek Preserve and Greenway, which will eventually encompass more than 400 acres and will be an anchor site of the new Quarry Creek Historic District.

A $1,250,000 grant from the Clean Ohio Conservation Fund will go towards the creation of a public park in the heart of the City of Avon Lake. The award will enable a partnership of TPL, the Avon Lake Save the Woods Committee, the Lorain County Metro Parks, and the City of Avon Lake to acquire a 70-acre property of woodlands and streams. The City of Avon Lake and Lorain County Metro Parks will provide the matching funds required by the grant.

The creation of Bass Lake Preserve, near the town of Chardon, is one of largest conservation projects in northeast Ohio in recent decades. Bass Lake offers serene waters and shoreline for recreation, and is home to a nesting pair of bald eagles. TPL purchased the land with funds from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program and transferred it to the Geauga Park District.
